Two Tourists Swept Away by Currents at Greenbowl Beach, Search Continues

BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG – A joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team is continuing efforts to locate two men who were swept away by strong currents at Greenbowl Beach in Ungasan Village, South Kuta District, Badung Regency. The search remained ongoing as of Monday (June 29, 2026).

The incident occurred on Sunday (June 28) at approximately 12:00 p.m. Central Indonesia Time (WITA) when five people were spending time at Greenbowl Beach. Three of them were walking along the shoreline searching for crabs, while the other two were swimming in the sea.

Moments later, the two swimmers were caught by powerful currents and dragged offshore. Their companions immediately attempted to rescue them and conducted an independent search, but the rough waves quickly caused both victims to disappear from sight. Local authorities were subsequently alerted.

Head of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, I Nyoman Sidakarya, said his office received the report shortly after the incident and immediately dispatched rescue personnel to the scene.

“Based on the information we received, the incident is estimated to have occurred at around 12:00 p.m. WITA,” Sidakarya said.

The missing individuals have been identified as Roni Firmansyah, 24, a construction worker from Badean Kulon Hamlet, Serut Village, Panti District, Jember Regency, East Java, and Dimas Hilman Hafizudin, 21, also a construction worker from Curahdami Hamlet, Sukorambi Village, Sukorambi District, Jember Regency, East Java.

In response to the report, the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office deployed seven rescuers at 6:00 a.m. WITA on Monday to join the joint SAR operation.

The search operation has been divided into several Search and Rescue Units (SRUs). A sea search team is conducting sweeps around the incident site using a rubber boat, while two land search teams are combing the coastline where the victims were believed to have been swept away.

To improve the effectiveness of the operation, rescuers are utilizing a thermal drone for aerial surveillance and an AquaEye underwater detection device to assist in locating possible objects beneath the water’s surface.

Since Monday morning, the sea search team has operated from Pandawa Beach toward the designated search area, while land teams have searched approximately two kilometers east and west along Greenbowl Beach. Additional observation has also been carried out from the cliffs overlooking the beach to expand the search coverage.

However, by the time Monday’s operation concluded in the afternoon, both victims had yet to be found. The search is scheduled to resume on Tuesday (June 30), with an expanded search area based on current movement and wind condition analysis.

Sidakarya urged the public to exercise greater caution when engaging in activities at beaches and coastal waters.

“Over the past month, most of the emergencies we have handled have occurred in coastal waters, ranging from overturned boats and people swept away by currents to individuals stranded on coastal cliffs. We urge everyone to always pay close attention to weather conditions and sea waves for their safety,” he said.

The search operation involves personnel from the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, Denpasar Police Water Unit (Polair), Pandawa Beach Lifeguards (Balawista), Banser Disaster Response Team, the victims’ families, and local residents.
