Immigration Office in Atambua Equips Unimor Students to Prevent Human Trafficking

BALINEWSID.COM, ATAMBUA — The Class II Immigration Office of TPI Atambua, in collaboration with the NTT Agency for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (BP3MI), the North Central Timor (TTU) Police, and the TTU Manpower and Transmigration Office, has equipped lecturers and students at Timor University (Unimor) with immigration literacy and strategies for safe international mobility.

The awareness program, titled “Think Before You Leave,” was held at the Victory 2 Hotel in TTU on Friday (August 21, 2026). The program focused on preventing human trafficking and raising awareness about the risks of illegal recruitment, particularly among young people seeking employment opportunities overseas.

Head of the Immigration Traffic and Immigration Stay Permit Section at the Atambua Immigration Office, Nursetya Ibnu Mudhir, S.H., M.M., and Head of BP3MI NTT, Suratmi Hamida, S.Sos., emphasized the importance of having valid travel documents and following proper immigration procedures.

Students were also introduced to the M-Paspor application and encouraged to take a proactive approach to developing practical skills and foreign-language proficiency to pursue formal employment opportunities abroad.

The officials highlighted opportunities in countries such as Germany, Japan, and Australia, while stressing that prospective migrant workers should use official and legal recruitment channels rather than taking risky non-procedural routes.

The dangers of human trafficking were further discussed by TTU Police Criminal Investigation Unit Chief IPTU Joesteve Christian Fortuna, S.Tr.K., and Head of the Placement, Protection and Employment Services Division at the TTU Manpower and Transmigration Office, Yuliana Elu Nino, S.Sos.

They explained various methods used by human trafficking networks and online scammers to recruit young people, including fraudulent job offers.

One of the concerns raised was the recruitment of young job seekers into illegal online gambling syndicates operating in Cambodia. Participants were urged to carefully verify job advertisements and avoid offers that promise quick employment or unusually high salaries without clear information about the employer and recruitment process.

The academic community was also encouraged to report suspected criminal activity to the police through Call Center 110.

As a follow-up to the program, the participating institutions agreed to strengthen cross-sector coordination to reduce illegal migrant worker recruitment and prevent human trafficking in East Nusa Tenggara.

The joint commitment includes expanding campus-based human trafficking prevention campaigns, improving public access to official information on overseas employment opportunities, and creating opportunities for free vocational training for young people.

The initiative is expected to help young people in NTT pursue international employment opportunities through legal, safe and responsible channels, while reducing their vulnerability to human trafficking and fraudulent recruitment schemes.
