Two Russian Tourists Trapped by Rising Tide at Padang-Padang Beach Rescued in Midnight SAR Operation

BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG – Two Russian tourists who became trapped by rising sea tides at Padang-Padang Beach in Pecatu Village, South Kuta District, were successfully rescued by a joint search and rescue (SAR) team during a challenging overnight operation on Saturday (May 30, 2026).

The victims were identified as Shumskikh Ariadna Anatolievna (22) and Kristia Kirill Eduardovich (23), both Russian nationals. The pair had been exploring the coastline at around 5:00 p.m. local time when they unknowingly entered an area that would later be cut off by the incoming tide.

As the evening progressed, seawater levels continued to rise, eventually submerging the route they had used to access the area. Unable to return, the two tourists became stranded on a rocky section of the coastline.

The Denpasar Search and Rescue Office received a report of the incident at 9:20 p.m. from a caller identified as Wedi. Following the report, the agency immediately coordinated with local lifeguards (Balawista) and the South Kuta Police before dispatching seven rescue personnel to the scene at 9:30 p.m.

The rescue team arrived at Padang-Padang Beach at approximately 10:05 p.m. and began coordinating with other emergency responders already on site. Using coordinates provided by the victims, the joint SAR team moved toward the location to assess the situation and determine the safest rescue approach.

About an hour later, rescuers successfully located the two tourists. However, evacuation could not be carried out immediately due to the lack of safe access to the victims’ position. The operation was complicated by steep and sharp cliff terrain, as well as limited visibility during the night.

While awaiting a suitable opportunity for evacuation, the victims remained under continuous monitoring by the SAR team. Authorities confirmed that they were in a relatively safe position, beyond the reach of the waves, and remained able to communicate with rescuers.

Despite the difficult conditions, the SAR team continued searching for a way to reach the stranded tourists. After navigating the rugged terrain, rescuers ultimately decided to conduct a high-angle rope rescue operation.

The rescue involved lowering a SAR officer down the cliff using ropes. The victims were then evacuated one at a time and safely brought back up to secure ground.

“Based on the conditions in the field and prioritizing the safety of both the rescue team and the victims, we successfully evacuated them at around 2:00 a.m. in good condition,” said Wahyu, Field Coordinator of the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office.

The operation involved personnel from the Denpasar Search and Rescue Office, the Denpasar Police Water and Air Unit (Polairud), Balawista lifeguards, as well as assistance from the victims’ friends and local residents.

Both tourists were rescued unharmed after spending several hours stranded along the cliffs of Padang-Padang Beach due to the rising tide.
