BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG — The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office deported a Nigerian national identified by the initials IO after he was found to have violated Indonesian immigration regulations by overstaying his residence permit for 93 days.

IO entered Indonesia through the Immigration Checkpoint at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta, on November 17, 2025, using a Visit Visa. According to immigration authorities, he came to Indonesia to stay within the permitted period while also looking for employment opportunities.

His residence permit was valid until May 15, 2026. However, after the permit expired, IO neither extended his stay nor left Indonesia, resulting in his continued presence in the country without a valid immigration permit.

While in Bali, IO moved between several places of residence in the Canggu area. During questioning, he told officers that he had engaged in tourism activities, including visiting beaches and cafes, as well as meeting friends in Bali.

IO also admitted that he did not leave Indonesia after his residence permit expired because he did not have enough money to purchase a return flight ticket to Nigeria.

The case came to light after a friend reported IO’s whereabouts to the police on August 13, 2026. He was subsequently taken into custody by the Kuta Police Sector (Polsek Kuta) and handed over to the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office on August 16, 2026, for further examination of his immigration status.

Following the investigation, Ngurah Rai Immigration imposed an Immigration Administrative Action (TAK) in the form of deportation. Authorities also proposed that IO be placed on the immigration blacklist in accordance with applicable Indonesian laws and regulations.

Ngurah Rai Immigration Head Novyandri emphasized that all foreign nationals staying in Indonesia are required to comply with immigration regulations, including the validity period of their residence permits.

“A residence permit determines the period that every foreign national is permitted to stay in Indonesia. Once the permit expires, the person concerned must immediately leave Indonesia or extend the permit in accordance with the applicable regulations. Financial constraints do not eliminate this obligation,” Novyandri said.

He added that the action against IO was part of Ngurah Rai Immigration’s efforts to maintain immigration compliance and law enforcement, particularly in Bali, one of Indonesia’s main international tourism destinations.

“We will continue to monitor foreign nationals and take firm action against those who violate immigration regulations. We hope all foreign nationals in Bali understand and respect the applicable rules, including ensuring that their residence permits remain valid throughout their stay in Indonesia,” he said.

IO was deported by the Intelligence and Immigration Enforcement Team (Inteldakim) of Ngurah Rai Immigration on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, on Qatar Airways flight QR961. From the transit route, he continued his journey to Lagos, Nigeria.

Ngurah Rai Immigration stated that the deportation was part of its immigration law enforcement duties and an effort to maintain Bali as a safe, orderly and conducive international tourism destination.
