Massive Fire Destroys Three Businesses in Sanur, Suspected to Have Started from Cooking Oil Blaze

BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR – A major fire engulfed three neighboring businesses in Sanur, South Denpasar, on Sunday afternoon (June 14, 2026), destroying a bar, another entertainment venue, and a spa. No casualties were reported, but significant material losses were incurred.

The fire broke out at around 1:50 p.m. local time at a commercial block located on Jalan Danau Poso No. 30, Sanur Kauh Village. The affected properties were Stumpys Bar, My Bar Sanur, and Ayu Marsini Spa.

According to preliminary information gathered by authorities, the fire is believed to have originated from a pan of cooking oil being heated on a gas stove in the kitchen of Stumpys Bar.

Witness Eva Wani Manurung, an employee who was present at the scene, said she was heating cooking oil when flames suddenly appeared in the pan.

Attempting to extinguish the fire, she covered the pan with a cloth that had been soaked in water and turned off the gas supply. However, the cloth caught fire, causing the flames to spread further.

She then called for help, and nearby residents responded with a fire extinguisher. Although the flames briefly subsided, they reignited after the extinguisher ran out, eventually reaching the kitchen roof and spreading rapidly.

Within minutes, the fire grew out of control, consuming Stumpys Bar before spreading to the adjacent My Bar Sanur and Ayu Marsini Spa, all of which were located within the same building complex.

Another witness, Seni Winda Sari, who was inside My Bar at the time, said she first noticed smoke entering the premises.

“After going outside, I saw that the smoke was coming from the kitchen of Stumpys Bar. At that time, the fire was still small and two employees were trying to put it out. About ten minutes later, the flames had become very large and spread to My Bar and then to the spa next door,” she said.

The Denpasar Fire and Rescue Department was immediately alerted and dispatched eight fire engines to the scene. Firefighters worked intensively to contain the blaze and successfully extinguished it at approximately 3:20 p.m.

The owners of the affected businesses were identified as Mea Hutapea, owner of Stumpys Bar; Desi Yuningaih, owner of My Bar Sanur; and Ayu Marsini, owner of Ayu Marsini Spa.

Police officers who arrived at the scene conducted an initial investigation, collected witness statements, documented the damage, and reported the incident to their superiors.

Authorities suspect the fire was triggered by overheated cooking oil on a gas stove. Investigators also noted that the presence of highly flammable materials, including alcohol, may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames. The fact that the businesses were located within the same block of buildings also accelerated the fire’s expansion.

No injuries or fatalities were reported. However, three commercial units suffered extensive damage. The total financial losses have not yet been determined, as the business owners are still assessing the extent of the destruction.

Police are continuing their investigation to establish the exact cause of the fire and complete the necessary documentation for further proceedings.
