Ngurah Rai Immigration Rejects Ethiopian National Wanted by Interpol in Rp5 Billion Fraud Case

BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG — The Ngurah Rai Immigration Office has refused entry to and repatriated a 29-year-old Ethiopian national identified by the initials S.M.Y., who was listed on an Interpol Red Notice in connection with a fraud case involving losses of approximately Rp5 billion.

S.M.Y. was repatriated to Ethiopia on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, under the close supervision of Indonesia’s National Central Bureau (NCB) Interpol.

The man was first detected on September 6, 2026, after arriving at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport on a Scoot Tigerair flight. During immigration screening and further examination, officers discovered that his name appeared on the Interpol alert list under the offense code Fraud.

Following coordination with the Indonesian NCB Interpol, S.M.Y. was recommended for refusal of entry into Indonesian territory.

According to the Interpol Individual Report, S.M.Y. had been listed as wanted for arrest since the notification was issued on April 9, 2026, in connection with a fraud case in Ethiopia. The reported losses amounted to ETB 46.4 million (Ethiopian birr), equivalent to approximately Rp5 billion.

The repatriation process encountered difficulties after S.M.Y. reportedly refused to return to Ethiopia. As a result, the process required direct supervision by the Indonesian NCB Interpol.

While awaiting repatriation, S.M.Y. was held in the holding room at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.

On September 15, 2026, he was eventually flown to Ethiopia aboard Etihad Airways on the Denpasar–Abu Dhabi–Addis Ababa route, under the direct escort of Indonesian NCB Interpol officers.

Ngurah Rai Immigration Office Head Muhamad Novyandri said the operation demonstrated the strong cooperation between the immigration authorities and the Indonesian NCB Interpol in detecting and following up on internationally wanted individuals.

“This is concrete evidence of the synergy between Ngurah Rai Immigration and the Indonesian NCB Interpol in detecting and following up on the presence of individuals wanted across national borders. Our immigration monitoring system operates strictly from arrival through departure. As soon as an Interpol hit is detected, we immediately coordinate and take action in accordance with established procedures,” Novyandri said.

He added that the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office would continue strengthening cooperation with the Indonesian National Police’s Division of International Relations (Divhubinter), the Indonesian NCB Interpol, and other relevant institutions.

These efforts aim to ensure that I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport remains a secure gateway for entry into and departure from Indonesia, protecting the country from the movement of foreign nationals who may pose risks to legal order at both the national and international levels.
