Environment Minister Inspects Denpasar Waste Facilities, Warns of Nationwide Ban on Open Dumping

BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR — Indonesia’s Environment Minister, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, inspected three Integrated Waste Processing Facilities (TPST) in Denpasar—Sesetan, Kertalangu, and Tahura—on Friday (April 17, 2026), warning that the government could halt open dumping practices nationwide if regional administrations fail to accelerate waste management efforts.

During the visit, Minister Hanif was accompanied by Bali Governor Wayan Koster and officials from the Denpasar City Government. The inspection forms part of a broader evaluation of waste management acceleration in Bali, particularly in Denpasar and Badung.

Hanif acknowledged that while progress has been made, the overall waste processing capacity remains below expectations. At TPST Kertalangu, for instance, operations currently handle only around 100 tons of waste one day.

“The recovery rate is not yet optimal. Kertalangu is still at about 100 tons one day. The equipment has arrived, and Sesetan is undergoing a similar process. We hope there will be no further delays,” he said.

Despite these challenges, Hanif expressed optimism that waste management systems in Denpasar and Badung would reach full operational capacity by July 2026.

“I am confident that by the end of July, all waste can be properly managed, especially in Bali,” he stated.

However, he stressed that the Ministry of Environment would not wait indefinitely for progress in these regions alone. Other regencies across Bali will soon be summoned to accelerate their waste management programs.

“We will start calling in other regencies next week. If there is no progress by August, we will exercise our authority under the law to stop open dumping practices across Indonesia,” Hanif warned.

Meanwhile, Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara said the city continues to intensify its waste processing efforts, particularly for organic waste.

He explained that the transportation of organic waste to the Suwung landfill is currently limited, especially for villages that do not yet have TPS3R (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) facilities.

“Waste that has already been processed at TPS3R is no longer sent to the landfill, as it has been converted into compost. Only untreated waste is transported to the landfill,” he said.

The Denpasar City Government aims to boost its waste processing capacity to 500 tons one day in order to achieve full waste management coverage. To support this target, the city has procured large-scale waste processing machinery, including technology capable of handling up to 200 tons one day.

“This will significantly reduce the burden. Our target is that once we reach 500 tons capacity, combined with processing at the source, the waste problem can be substantially reduced,” he added.

However, Jaya Negara acknowledged that Denpasar generates approximately 770 tons of waste daily, underscoring the need for cross-sector involvement—from households to businesses such as hotels and restaurants.

He also emphasized the importance of public awareness in waste management.

“There are still people disposing of waste improperly. We urge cooperation, as this is a shared responsibility,” he said.

The Denpasar administration continues to expand its waste collection services, which now serve hundreds of thousands of customers, while strengthening community-based waste processing systems to meet its target of comprehensive waste management by mid-2026.
