BALINEWSID.COM, JAKARTA – Hundreds of protesters representing the Kalimantan and Sumatra Youth Front staged a demonstration at the headquarters of state-owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero) on Jalan Trunojoyo, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Monday (July 6), demanding accountability over widespread blackouts and rolling power outages affecting the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan.

Arriving in buses and open-bed trucks, the demonstrators blocked the main entrance to PLN’s headquarters while under heavy police security. As part of a symbolic protest, they also “sealed” the office by installing a large banner reading, “This Office Is Sealed” across the front gate.

Several protest banners were displayed during the rally, including one featuring PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo with the slogan, “The President Director Gets Richer, While the People Continue to Suffer.”

During speeches delivered at a makeshift stage outside the building, protesters presented three key demands.

First, they called on PLN’s Board of Directors to publicly account for the recurring power outages that have disrupted communities across Kalimantan and Sumatra. They demanded a transparent explanation of the causes of the blackouts, details of the measures being taken to restore reliability, and guarantees that similar incidents will not occur again.

Second, the protesters urged law enforcement agencies and relevant oversight institutions to conduct a comprehensive audit and investigation into PLN’s operational management and any alleged negligence in maintaining the national electricity system. They said such an investigation is necessary to ensure transparency, accountability, and legal action if violations are found.

Third, they called on President Prabowo Subianto to dismiss PLN’s board of directors if electricity services in Kalimantan and Sumatra continue to experience recurring outages within the next 72 hours.

“We urge all relevant authorities to immediately follow up on the people’s aspirations,” the rally coordinator said during the protest.

No member of PLN’s board of directors came out to meet the demonstrators during the rally. However, after several hours of protest, 10 representatives of the group were eventually allowed to enter the building to negotiate and formally present their demands to company officials.
