BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR – The Indonesian Red Crescent Society, known as Bulan Sabit Merah Indonesia (BSMI), celebrated its 24th anniversary on June 8, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to humanitarian service through healthcare, disaster response, and social assistance programs across Indonesia and abroad.
Since its establishment in 2002, BSMI has played an active role in responding to natural disasters, public health crises, and humanitarian emergencies. The organization currently operates through a network spanning 24 provinces and 155 regencies and cities throughout Indonesia.
Chairman of the National Executive Board of BSMI, Muhammad Djazuli Ambari, said the organization’s 24-year journey reflects the dedication of its volunteers, medical personnel, and members in serving humanity regardless of ethnicity, religion, race, or social background.
“For 24 years, BSMI has strived to be present wherever communities are in need. From disasters across Indonesia to international humanitarian crises, we have continued to carry out our mission professionally and sustainably,” Djazuli said.
One of BSMI’s significant humanitarian efforts took place in Bali following the devastating floods that struck the island on September 10, 2025. Triggered by extreme rainfall between September 9 and 10, the disaster affected 18 districts across six regencies and one municipality, including Badung, Tabanan, Karangasem, Jembrana, Gianyar, Klungkung, and Denpasar.
The floods claimed at least nine lives, damaged hundreds of homes, and caused substantial material losses. During the emergency response, BSMI Bali mobilized volunteers and humanitarian aid, distributing food supplies, household necessities, and kitchen equipment. The organization also provided medical examinations and trauma-healing services for affected residents.
Beyond emergency response, BSMI continues to implement rehabilitation and recovery programs, public health services, disaster preparedness education, and community empowerment initiatives. In the academic sector, the organization also publishes the Indonesian Red Crescent Humanitarian Journal (ICONHUM) as part of its contribution to humanitarian research and knowledge development.
On the international stage, BSMI has participated in numerous humanitarian missions in conflict zones and disaster-affected countries. Among its most notable contributions was the deployment of Indonesia’s Emergency Medical Team (EMT) to Gaza, Palestine, supported by 14 medical specialists providing healthcare services to victims of conflict and humanitarian crises.
The organization has also delivered humanitarian assistance to disaster-stricken communities in Turkey, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar, and the Philippines, while supporting Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and Myanmar. In addition, BSMI has facilitated scholarship opportunities for Palestinian students through partnerships with several Indonesian universities.
According to Djazuli, BSMI’s extensive experience in national and international humanitarian missions provides a strong foundation for strengthening its organizational capacity in the years ahead.
“Humanitarian challenges are becoming increasingly complex. Climate change is intensifying the frequency of disasters, while conflicts and health crises continue to affect many parts of the world. Therefore, BSMI will continue to strengthen the capacity of its volunteers, medical teams, emergency response systems, and humanitarian networks to provide faster, more accurate, and more professional services,” he said.
As it enters its 24th year, BSMI is calling on all elements of society to reinforce the spirit of solidarity and social responsibility. Djazuli emphasized that humanitarian values must remain a cornerstone in building resilient and compassionate communities.
“This anniversary is a moment to reaffirm our commitment. BSMI will continue serving humanity, strengthening hope for those affected by disasters and crises, and bringing Indonesia’s humanitarian spirit to the world,” he concluded.
The 24th anniversary celebration serves as a reminder of BSMI’s enduring role in humanitarian service—from assisting flood victims in Bali to supporting communities affected by crises across the globe.
