BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG — A total of 3,026 inmates and juvenile detainees under the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections received sentence reductions to mark Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day on Monday (Aug. 17, 2026).
The remission decisions were symbolically handed over by Bali Governor Wayan Koster and Head of the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections Andi Wijaya Rivai at Kerobokan Class IIA Correctional Facility in Badung.
Of the total recipients, 3,025 inmates received General Remissions (RU), while three juvenile detainees received General Sentence Reductions (PMPU).
The 3,025 inmates receiving remissions consisted of 2,922 people granted RU-I, which provides a partial reduction of their prison terms, and 101 people granted RU-II, which may result in immediate release if the relevant requirements are met.
Meanwhile, all three juvenile detainees received PMPU-I.
The Bali Regional Office initially recorded 3,060 inmates and juvenile detainees in its proposed list. Following the verification process and issuance of remission decisions, however, the number of recipients finalized at 3,026.
The remission program also covered foreign nationals serving prison sentences in Bali. Of the 70 foreign nationals included in the initial proposal, 64 received remission decisions, comprising 60 RU-I recipients and four RU-II recipients.
Among Indonesian nationals, 2,990 people were proposed for remission, with 2,959 ultimately receiving sentence reductions. They comprised 2,862 RU-I recipients and 97 RU-II recipients.
The government said the remission was part of the fulfillment of inmates’ legal rights and recognition for prisoners and juvenile detainees who had met the requirements stipulated under Indonesian law.
The program was based, among other regulations, on Law No. 22 of 2022 on Corrections and Presidential Decree No. 174 of 1999 concerning Remissions.
As of Aug. 17, 2026, the Bali Regional Office of the Directorate General of Corrections recorded 4,938 people under its correctional system. The figure consisted of 1,240 detainees and 3,698 convicted inmates.
The sentence reductions were implemented simultaneously at 11 correctional facilities across Bali, comprising six correctional institutions, four detention centers and one juvenile correctional facility.
Authorities emphasized that sentence reductions are not granted automatically to all inmates. Eligibility is determined through established requirements and procedures under applicable laws and regulations.
The Independence Day remission program is expected to serve not only as recognition of inmates’ compliance and rehabilitation progress, but also as an incentive to strengthen their sense of national responsibility, discipline and commitment to social reintegration.
