Swiss National Named Suspect in Alleged Blasphemy Case Related to Nyepi in Bali

BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR – The Cyber Crime Directorate (Ditressiber) of Bali Regional Police has named a Swiss national, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, as a suspect in an alleged criminal case involving religion and belief, related to a social media post that insulted the Nyepi Day celebration.

The case was uncovered by personnel of Sub-Directorate III of Ditressiber Bali Police, led by Head of Sub-Directorate III Adjunct Senior Commissioner I Made Joni Antara Putra, under the directive of Bali Police Cyber Crime Director Senior Commissioner Aszhari Kurniawan. The investigation took place from Friday, March 20, 2026, to Saturday, March 21, 2026.

The case began on Friday (March 20) at around 08:00 WITA, when officers conducted profiling of the Instagram account @luzzysun, which uploaded an Insta Story containing statements deemed insulting toward Nyepi Day.

From the investigation, it was discovered that the account belonged to Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, a Swiss citizen. Officers then initiated a search for the individual.

Later that day, at approximately 20:30 WITA, after following the suspect from the Kuta area to Ubud, officers determined that he headed to a house in the Tumbak Bayuh area, Mengwi, Badung. At the request of Ni Luh Djelantik, officers secured the suspect and brought him to the Ditressiber Bali Police office for further examination.

On Saturday (March 21) at around 11:30 WITA, Ni Luh Djelantik officially reported the case to Bali Police under report number LP/B/258/III/2026/SPKT/POLDA BALI. She was subsequently questioned as the reporting witness.

At 16:00 WITA, investigators conducted a case review and escalated the case to the investigation stage, followed by formally naming Luzian Andrin Zgraggen as a suspect. One hour later, at 17:00 WITA, the suspect was officially arrested based on an arrest warrant.

Investigators then questioned the suspect at 18:00 WITA, and at 23:00 WITA, he was detained at the Bali Police Detention Center.

In this case, the suspect is charged under Article 301 paragraph (1) of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code (KUHP), related to the dissemination of information containing elements of a criminal act as referred to in Article 300 of the KUHP, namely expressions of hatred toward a group based on religion or belief.

Investigators stated that all elements of the offense have been fulfilled, including the legal subject, the act of dissemination via social media, content containing elements of hatred toward Nyepi Day as a sacred day for Hindus, and the intent for the content to be publicly known.

Further investigative steps include the issuance of a Notification Letter of Commencement of Investigation (SPDP), submission for court approval to seize evidence in the form of one mobile phone belonging to the suspect, seizure of the Instagram account used, and the examination of several witnesses.
