BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG – A Portuguese national has been detained by the Criminal Investigation Unit of the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport Police for allegedly possessing and carrying ammunition without valid legal documents in Indonesia.
The incident occurred on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at approximately 11:28 p.m. local time at the International Departure Terminal of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in Badung, Bali.
The case came to light when Aviation Security (Avsec) officers conducted routine baggage screening using an X-ray machine at the airport’s Security Check Point (SCP). During the inspection, officers detected suspicious objects inside a backpack belonging to a passenger scheduled to fly to Abu Dhabi.
Following a manual inspection conducted with the passenger’s consent, security personnel discovered 50 rounds of 22 Long Rifle ammunition stored in their original box and wrapped in white tissue inside one of the compartments of a black backpack.
The owner of the bag was identified by the initials A.C.R.D.C.F.N., a 47-year-old citizen of Portugal. During preliminary questioning, he admitted that the ammunition belonged to him.
Avsec officers immediately secured the passenger and the evidence before reporting the incident to police officers stationed at the airport. The suspect and the confiscated items were subsequently taken to the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport Police Headquarters for further legal proceedings.
Evidence seized by investigators includes 50 rounds of 22 Long Rifle ammunition, one black ammunition box, and a black backpack used to store the ammunition.
According to investigators, the suspect stated that he is an active member of a shooting sports federation in Portugal. He claimed that the ammunition had likely been left inside a backpack he regularly used for shooting practice and that he was unaware it remained in the bag while traveling internationally.
However, the suspect acknowledged that he did not possess any permit or legal documentation issued by the Indonesian government authorizing the possession, storage, or transportation of ammunition within Indonesian territory.
The case has been officially recorded under Police Report Number LP-B/14/VI/2026/SPKT.SATRESKRIM/POLRES KWS BDR I GST NGURAH RAI dated June 21, 2026.
Investigators are continuing their inquiry by questioning witnesses, reviewing CCTV footage, securing evidence, coordinating with the Portuguese Consulate, and conducting a case review to determine further legal action.
The suspect is alleged to have violated Article 306 of Indonesia’s Criminal Code (KUHP) as stipulated under Law No. 1 of 2023.
Meanwhile, Acting Head of Public Relations for the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport Police, First Inspector I Gede Suka Artana, speaking on behalf of Airport Police Chief Senior Commissioner I Komang Budiartha, confirmed that the suspect and evidence have been secured and that the investigation remains ongoing.
Police also urged international travelers to ensure that all items in their luggage comply with Indonesian laws and aviation security regulations to help maintain public safety and security.
