NTT Community Cleans Kuta–Legian Beach, Collects 2.5 Tons of Waste

BALINEWSID.COM, BALI – Around 50 members of the Bungawaru Alor Community from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) held a beach clean-up action along Kuta Beach and Legian Beach in Bali on Sunday (March 15, 2026).

The social initiative carried the theme “Protect the Earth, Our Shared Home – From Us, For Us.”

Participants consisted of Bungawaru community members and Alor residents currently living in Bali. The volunteers included children, teenagers, adults, and community elders who worked together to collect waste scattered along the coastline.

During the activity, the volunteers gathered large amounts of trash dominated by plastic waste and driftwood carried ashore by sea currents. The total waste collected was estimated to reach around 2,500 kilograms.

Clean-up coordinator Yos Koilmo said the activity was organized as a form of environmental concern for Bali, which has become a home for many migrants from Alor.

“This is driven by our sense of care and belonging as part of the Alor community living in Bali. We collected around 40 large plastic bags of waste, each weighing between 50 to 70 kilograms,” Yos said.

He explained that the community took the initiative after seeing the concerning amount of trash along the beaches. According to him, maintaining environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility.

“Seeing the condition of waste along Kuta and Legian beaches, which is quite alarming, we decided to take action and clean it ourselves. Activities like this will not stop here. We are committed to continuing similar efforts as a form of our concern for Bali’s environment, which has become our shared home,” he added.

Meanwhile, Bungawaru Alor–Bali community figure Frits Atabuy encouraged the public, particularly the NTT diaspora living in Bali, to continue engaging in positive activities and maintain the good reputation of their home region.

He emphasized that the issue of waste is not solely the responsibility of the government but also the responsibility of everyone who lives in and enjoys Bali’s natural beauty.

“As eastern Indonesians living in Bali, regardless of where we come from, maintaining Bali’s cleanliness is our collective responsibility, not just the government’s,” Frits said.

He added that migrants living in Bali should also contribute positively to the environment and local communities. Therefore, he invited NTT residents in Bali to actively participate in social activities that benefit the environment.
