I Nyoman Giri Prasta Insists Public Opposition Will Not Stop Denpasar Waste-to-Energy Project

BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR — Bali Deputy Governor I Nyoman Giri Prasta has firmly stated that opposition from a number of residents against the Denpasar Raya Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) project will not halt the development, saying the project has already been decided by the central government.

“We think this matter regarding the cooperation has been settled. It has already been decided,” Giri Prasta said at the Bali DPRD Office on Monday (May 18, 2026).

He urged all parties to support the project, describing the PSEL facility as one of the key solutions to Bali’s ongoing waste management problems, particularly ahead of the planned closure of the Suwung landfill.

“And hopefully all parties will support it. There should be no more reason not to support it. Once again, this PSEL project does not involve piling up waste,” he said.

The former two-term Badung regent explained that the waste processing system used in the PSEL facility would differ from conventional landfill methods. He said the project would operate with an industrial-style processing system capable of handling waste quickly.

“Waste processing into electrical energy is carried out using a factory system. Waste comes in during the morning and by the afternoon it has already been processed,” he said.

In addition to reducing waste accumulation, the processed waste is expected to generate electricity that can later be utilized by the public.

Despite continuing criticism, Giri Prasta asked residents to remain patient during the construction process, while assuring that the government would continue moving forward with the project as a long-term solution to Bali’s waste issues.

He also revealed that the Denpasar Raya PSEL project is part of a central government program funded under the coordination of Danantara. He expressed hope that the facility could position Bali as a national model for modern waste management.

“And hopefully in the future, once this PSEL project is completed, Bali can become one of the national role models,” he said.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Denpasar Raya PSEL project is scheduled for July 8, 2026. The facility will be built on land owned by PT Pelabuhan Indonesia.

However, the development plan has drawn opposition from several residents in Pesanggaran, Denpasar, who argue that the project site is too close to residential areas and located within a green zone.
