BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR — Four semi-permanent boarding rooms were destroyed by fire on Jalan Malboro XIV, Pemecutan Klod Village, West Denpasar District, Denpasar, Bali, on Tuesday night, August 18, 2026.
The fire broke out at around 10:30 p.m. local time and was suspected to have been caused by a cooking stove used by one of the boarding house residents.
Denpasar City Police Public Relations Chief Insp. I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya said the incident was reported after residents noticed flames coming from the western side of the building.
According to witness Kadek Suteja, 41, he was sleeping when his grandfather, Ketut Suparta, woke him and informed him that a fire had broken out near the western side of the building.
Suteja immediately went outside and saw flames coming from one of the boarding rooms. He attempted to put out the fire using a water hose, but the flames quickly grew larger.
Residents then worked together to rescue belongings from the affected rooms while waiting for firefighters to arrive.
Another witness, Yeni Juita Margareta, 37, said she heard people shouting that there was a fire. When she went outside, she saw flames coming from Room No. 10, occupied by Evi Nurjana, 31.
Yeni and other residents initially attempted to extinguish the fire. However, as the flames intensified, she fled the area with her husband and child.
Evi Nurjana, the occupant of Room No. 10, told investigators that she had been cooking and frying potato fritters at around 10 p.m. She briefly left the room to buy fuel for her motorcycle. When she returned, the boarding room was already on fire.
Denpasar firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control at around 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 19, after deploying eight fire engines.
The fire completely destroyed four semi-permanent boarding rooms. The total material loss has yet to be determined.
Police said the preliminary investigation indicated that the fire may have originated from a cooking stove used by one of the residents.
No fatalities or injuries were reported in the incident.
