British Tourist Reports iPhone Theft in Alleged Flat Tire Scam in South Kuta

BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG – The Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) of Denpasar Police is investigating an alleged mobile phone theft involving a suspected flat tire scam in South Kuta, Badung Regency.

The incident, which recently went viral on social media after a video of the alleged theft circulated online, reportedly occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at around 11:00 a.m. local time on Jalan Raya Ungasan, near Tarabelle Restaurant in Pecatu Village, South Kuta District.

The victim, identified by the initials GSON (42), is a British national. According to a report filed with the police, the incident occurred while the victim and his girlfriend were traveling by car through the area.

During the journey, the couple was approached by a man riding a red Honda Scoopy motorcycle. The suspect allegedly informed the victim that one of the vehicle’s rear tires appeared to be flat.

Believing the warning, the victim stopped his car and stepped out to inspect the tire. While the victim was focused on checking the vehicle, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the situation by opening the front passenger door and stealing a navy-blue iPhone that had been left on the seat.

After taking the phone, the suspect immediately fled the scene.

The victim later realized that his mobile phone was missing and subsequently reported the incident to the authorities.

Denpasar Police have launched an investigation and are currently gathering evidence and seeking to identify the suspect involved in the alleged theft.

Police have also urged motorists and tourists to remain vigilant against distraction-based crimes, including flat tire scams, which are often used by perpetrators to divert victims’ attention before committing theft.
