BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR – A late-night celebration of Argentina’s victory in the 2026 FIFA World Cup turned into a violent altercation between boarding house residents in East Denpasar early Wednesday (July 8, 2026).
The incident occurred at around 2:20 a.m. local time at a boarding house on Jalan Akasia XVI, Gang Durian, East Denpasar District.
According to the Public Relations Section of Denpasar Police, the East Denpasar Police Watch Commander (Pawas) received a report of the disturbance and immediately dispatched officers, along with the Police’s Patrol Unit (UKL), to the scene to restore order.
One witness, identified only as SD, a 21-year-old man from West Sumba, said he and other residents were asleep when they were awakened by the sound of motorcycles being revved loudly and people shouting outside the boarding house. Feeling disturbed, they went outside and found a group of residents from a boarding house across the alley making the noise.
When they confronted the group and asked them to stop, the situation quickly escalated. The group, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, took offense at being reprimanded, leading to a heated argument that soon turned into a physical fight involving punches and stone throwing.
Another witness, Mecel, a man from Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara, said he and several friends had just returned from watching the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Tukad Badung. Excited by Argentina’s victory, they celebrated by revving their motorcycles and shouting, “Argentina won!” as they arrived at their boarding house.
The celebration drew complaints from residents across the street. Due to the influence of alcohol, one member of Mecel’s group reacted aggressively to the warning, triggering the confrontation.
Local residents, traditional security officers (pecalang), and police officers quickly intervened to separate the two groups before the situation worsened.
Both sides sustained minor injuries, including bruises and abrasions on their backs and elbows. Police determined that the altercation was caused by a misunderstanding that escalated under the influence of alcohol.
Officers from East Denpasar Police, together with pecalang and village authorities, mediated the dispute. Considering the late hour and to maintain public order, all individuals involved were instructed to return to their respective boarding house rooms and refrain from causing further disturbances.
The case was resolved through mediation, and authorities urged residents to maintain public order and avoid excessive celebrations that could disturb the surrounding community.
