BALINEWSID.COM, MEDAN — The head of Medan Class I Detention Center, Andi Surya, has emphasized that the facility is open to media reports and public information concerning security and alleged drug trafficking, but warned against spreading unsubstantiated allegations.

Andi made the statement on Tuesday (August 18, 2026), when responding to reports alleging drug trafficking inside the Medan Class I Detention Center.

“We are never allergic to reporting that is informative. We will respond positively and follow up on it. But do not make false accusations, especially by spreading them through the media,” Andi said.

He said information provided by members of the public plays an important role in early detection and supervision within the detention facility. According to Andi, officers routinely follow up on reports concerning alleged violations, including suspected drug activity circulated on social media.

In addition to conducting regular raids, detention center officers immediately inspect locations and inmates mentioned in reports, he said.

“Based on the inspection of the residential block mentioned in the report, no narcotics evidence was found as cited in the news reports,” Andi said.

Four inmates linked to the information also underwent urine tests, with all four testing negative for narcotics, he added.

Despite the findings, Andi expressed appreciation for public concern over security and efforts to eradicate drugs in correctional facilities. He said public participation was important in helping authorities maintain a safe and drug-free detention center.

“We thank members of the public who continue to pay attention and provide us with information. Every piece of information becomes material for us to check and follow up. This is a form of synergy in keeping the detention center safe and free from drugs,” he said.

Andi stressed that supervision of inmates would continue to be strengthened through regular and unannounced searches. The detention center will also improve coordination with law enforcement agencies as part of efforts to prevent narcotics from entering and circulating within the facility.

“We are not closing ourselves off to any information we receive. On the contrary, we hope the public will continue to actively provide information if they find or know of any suspected violations. Every report will be followed up in accordance with applicable procedures and regulations,” he said.

The Medan Class I Detention Center reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening supervision and supporting efforts to eradicate narcotics in prisons and detention centers.

The facility also called on the public to work together with correctional authorities to maintain a safe, orderly and drug-free environment.
