Hutama Karya Tightens Safety Measures Following Fatal Permai Toll Road Crash

BALINEWSID.COM, JAKARTA – PT Hutama Karya (Persero) has intensified safety measures along the Pekanbaru–Dumai (Permai) section of the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS) following a fatal traffic accident that claimed the lives of two bus passengers. Authorities suspect the crash was caused by the bus driver’s microsleep.

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning, July 7, 2026, when a passenger bus collided with a truck traveling in the same direction on the Permai Toll Road. According to the Highway Patrol (PJR), the preliminary investigation indicates that the bus driver may have fallen asleep momentarily behind the wheel, triggering the collision.

Head of PT Hutama Karya’s Central Sumatra Regional Division, Untung Joko Ristyono, expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to improving road safety across its toll road network.

“We extend our deepest condolences over this tragic traffic accident that resulted in the loss of lives,” Untung said on Tuesday.

He stated that Hutama Karya continues to strengthen the implementation of safety programs across all JTTS sections under its management, with particular focus on reducing nighttime accidents and rear-end collisions, which are frequently linked to driver fatigue.

According to Untung, all toll roads operated by the company are equipped with safety infrastructure that complies with technical standards and government regulations, including traffic signs, road markings, delineators, guardrails, and other essential safety devices.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the company has implemented a range of preventive initiatives, including inspections of driver and vehicle readiness to reduce the risk of microsleep, pre-entry safety campaigns at toll gates, and public safety announcements delivered through toll gate public address systems and operational vehicles.

Additional measures include inspections of vehicle tail lights, monitoring of Over Dimension Over Loading (ODOL) vehicles, installation of safety banners at strategic locations, regular road safety broadcasts through radio channels, and the deployment of night-shift management teams to strengthen supervision during high-risk hours.

Hutama Karya also urged motorists not to continue driving when feeling tired or drowsy and encouraged them to make use of nearby rest areas to prevent fatigue-related accidents.

To further support safer travel, road users are encouraged to use the Reminder Notification feature available in the Mozy application, which provides periodic reminders to take breaks during long journeys. The application also offers information on rest area locations, traffic conditions, and other travel support services.

Untung emphasized that all operational units have been instructed to ensure every safety program is implemented in a disciplined, consistent, and sustainable manner.

“Safety is a shared responsibility and must remain the highest priority in every operational activity. Safe Journey, Arrive Safely,” he concluded.
