BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR — An independent, critical and professional press is considered a key pillar in maintaining the quality of democracy, particularly amid the rapid flow of information in the digital era.

The statement was made by Chairman of the Bali Provincial Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), I Putu Agus Tirta Suguna, during the celebration of the 14th anniversary of the Online Journalists Association (IWO) of Indonesia and the first anniversary of IWO Bali at the Etna Meeting Room, Bali Provincial Tourism Office, on Sunday (Aug. 30, 2026).

Agus said cooperation between Bawaslu and online media was more than a formal partnership. It was also an important part of strengthening democratic and election oversight.

Amid the rapid spread of information through digital platforms, the press is expected to serve as a filter for reliable information while helping the public better understand democratic processes.

Bawaslu Bali therefore urged online journalists to consistently produce objective, balanced, educational and responsible journalism.

The call is in line with IWO Bali’s commitment to contributing to Bali’s development. Chairman of the IWO Bali anniversary committee, Agus Pebriana, said the organization’s first anniversary was an opportunity to strengthen the strategic role of journalists in providing critical oversight while contributing constructively to regional development.

IWO Bali Chairman Tri Widiyanti emphasized that journalists’ primary responsibility should be to serve the public interest by presenting verified and accountable information.

“IWO Bali believes that information delivered to the public should not merely sensationalize issues, but should instead organize and present information objectively, critically and constructively to help map the direction of Bali’s development, from the economic and environmental sectors to tourism,” Tri said.

Meanwhile, Bali Governor and Chairman of the IWO Bali Honorary Council Wayan Koster stressed the importance of journalistic professionalism amid rapid technological developments.

“We can see how technology is developing at every level, including in our personal lives. This is a very good platform for building the nation and the state, particularly in Bali. The press must stand for the truth, be balanced, objective, critical and make a contribution,” Koster said.

Koster also emphasized the role of the press as a bridge of communication between the government, the public and various stakeholders. He said journalists must carry out their duties in accordance with journalistic ethics.

“Between the government and the people, among members of the public, and among other stakeholders. With such a position, the press must operate based on its internal rules, namely journalistic ethics. The media conveys public aspirations to the government and other parties, while also helping educate and advance society as a whole,” he said.

The shared commitment between the press, Bawaslu and the Bali provincial government is seen as an important step toward building a healthier digital democratic ecosystem in Bali.

A press that upholds independence, balance, objectivity and journalistic ethics is expected to remain a strategic partner in safeguarding democracy and maintaining a healthy public information space.
