BALINEWSID.COM, PEKANBARU – The Riau Police Narcotics Investigation Directorate (Ditresnarkoba) and Aviation Security (Avsec) officers at Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru have foiled an attempt to smuggle approximately two kilograms of crystal methamphetamine. A man identified by his initials, AS, was arrested after the drugs were discovered in his suitcase.
Riau Police Narcotics Investigation Director Kombes Pol Putu Yudha Prawira said the case began when Avsec officers detected a suspicious suitcase during an X-ray screening at around 1:30 p.m. on Monday (July 20).
“Avsec officers found a suspicious suitcase during the X-ray inspection. After a search, the owner of the suitcase was found in the departure waiting area,” Putu said on Saturday (July 25).
Police and Avsec officers subsequently searched the suitcase and found 14 packages of suspected crystal methamphetamine concealed inside folded jeans.
During preliminary questioning, the suspect allegedly told investigators that he had received the drugs in Bireuen, Aceh Province, and was transporting them to Jakarta.
Police seized 14 packages of suspected crystal methamphetamine weighing approximately two kilograms, one blue suitcase, and two mobile phones.
Putu said investigators were continuing to develop the case to uncover the wider drug trafficking network behind the shipment.
“We are still conducting further investigations to identify the higher-level network, trace the flow of funds, and pursue money laundering charges if sufficient evidence is found,” he said.
The suspect and the evidence have been taken to the Riau Police headquarters for further investigation in accordance with applicable law.
Police have urged the public to play an active role in combating drug trafficking by reporting any suspected drug abuse or illicit narcotics distribution in their communities.
