BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG – Indonesia’s Ngurah Rai Immigration Office has released the chronology surrounding the death of an Australian national, identified by the initials CJMH (39), who died while being held in immigration detention pending deportation on Friday (July 10, 2026).
Head of the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office, Bugie Kurniawan, said CJMH had been detained after authorities confirmed that he had violated Indonesia’s immigration regulations by misusing his residence permit.
The enforcement action followed a public report received in late March 2026 alleging that the Australian citizen had committed immigration violations. Immigration officers subsequently conducted a series of investigations and repeatedly summoned CJMH to provide clarification. The investigation concluded that he had indeed misused his stay permit.
According to Kurniawan, despite being given several opportunities to resolve his immigration status voluntarily, CJMH failed to comply with official summonses issued by the authorities. On Friday, July 10, immigration officers, accompanied by local community representatives from the Banjar in Jimbaran, South Kuta, took him into custody at his residence.
CJMH was then placed in the detention room at the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office while awaiting deportation proceedings.
Later that day, officers conducting routine monitoring observed unusual activity through the facility’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) system. They noticed that CJMH had remained inside the detention room’s restroom for an extended period without showing any movement.
Officers immediately entered the restroom and found him unconscious. First aid was administered on the spot, including checking his vital signs, providing oxygen assistance, and requesting an ambulance from the nearest hospital.
Medical personnel arrived shortly afterward and provided emergency treatment before transporting CJMH to Bali Jimbaran General Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead while en route to the hospital. Based on the hospital’s preliminary examination, the incident is suspected to have been caused by a heart attack.
Following the incident, the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office coordinated with the Badung Police and the South Kuta Police, whose officers conducted a crime scene investigation. Authorities stated that determining the exact cause of death is now under further investigation by the police in coordination with the hospital.
Kurniawan expressed his condolences to the deceased’s family and emphasized that all detention supervision procedures had been carried out in accordance with standard operating procedures. He said officers responded immediately after detecting the irregularity through CCTV by initiating emergency measures and providing first aid.
He also confirmed that the Ngurah Rai Immigration Office will continue to coordinate closely with the Indonesian National Police, the hospital, and representatives of the Australian Government to ensure that the handling of the case remains transparent and in accordance with applicable laws and procedures.
