BALINEWSID.COM, BALI – Bali Governor Wayan Koster said the 31-kilometer traffic congestion on the Denpasar–Gilimanuk route during the Eid homecoming season was triggered by an increase in domestic tourist arrivals and logistics transportation entering the island between March 1 and March 15, 2026.
According to Koster, the number of domestic visitors traveling to Bali has increased significantly compared to the same period last year.
“Currently, the number of domestic tourists coming to Bali has increased quite significantly. In addition, the number of domestic transport vehicles entering the island has also risen by around 6 percent,” Koster said.
He explained that the peak of the Eid homecoming traffic had initially been predicted to occur on March 17–18. However, the surge of vehicles happened earlier than expected, resulting in traffic conditions that exceeded earlier projections.
“We did not expect it to be that crowded, especially since our infrastructure capacity is still limited,” he said.
To ease the congestion, Koster stated that police officers and related agencies had taken several measures in the field to manage traffic flow.
He added that he had instructed the Head of the Transportation Agency and the Traffic Directorate to accelerate efforts to handle the increasing vehicle flow.
Koster also highlighted that the road section between Gilimanuk and Denpasar has many curves and steep inclines, which often slow down logistics trucks and cause long queues behind them.
“The road from Gilimanuk to Denpasar has many bends and uphill sections. When logistics trucks pass through, their speed is very slow. Vehicles such as buses and other cars often line up behind them, making the queue even longer,” he explained.
To address the issue, the provincial government is considering a new policy to regulate the movement of logistics vehicles entering and operating within Bali.
“That is why I am considering creating a policy that regulates logistics vehicles entering Bali as well as those operating within the island,” Koster said.
Earlier reports stated that traffic congestion on the Denpasar–Gilimanuk route had reached approximately 31 kilometers in length.
