Kuta Police Criminal Investigation Chief Tests Positive for Drugs Amid Scrutiny Over Alleged Assault Case

BALINEWSID.COM, BADUNG – Amid public scrutiny over an alleged assault on an Algerian national at Kuta Police Station, another case has emerged involving a senior police officer. The Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit (Kanit Reskrim) of Kuta Police, identified only as First Inspector (Iptu) MDP, has tested positive for narcotics in a urine test and is currently under investigation by the Professional and Internal Affairs Division (Propam) of Bali Police.

Reports circulating earlier claimed that Iptu MDP had been arrested by the Bali Police Narcotics Directorate. However, Bali Police spokesperson Senior Commissioner Ariasandi denied the claim.

According to Ariasandi, the officer was not arrested during a narcotics operation. Instead, the urine test was conducted as part of a preventive internal screening for drug abuse within the police force.

“It was not an arrest. The Bali Police Narcotics Directorate conducted a urine test as part of efforts to prevent drug abuse among police personnel, and the result came back positive. The officer has since been handed over to the Bali Police Professional and Internal Affairs Division for further investigation,” Ariasandi said on Tuesday.

A police source, meanwhile, said Iptu MDP has been at Bali Police Headquarters for approximately two weeks and has been placed in a special detention facility managed by the Internal Affairs Division.

“He has been detained at Bali Police Headquarters for about two weeks and is being handled by the Narcotics Directorate,” the source said.

The source also stated that the officer was expected to be released from the Internal Affairs detention facility on Wednesday. However, no official information has been provided regarding when the urine test was conducted or whether any narcotics evidence was seized.

The case surfaced while Kuta Police has been under public attention over allegations that officers assaulted an Algerian national identified as MBC, who had been arrested in connection with alleged shoplifting incidents at two shopping malls in Bali.

Through his attorney, Florentina, MBC alleged that he was physically assaulted by approximately ten Kuta Police officers during interrogation. He claimed the incident caused injuries to his reproductive organs and that he is currently undergoing medical examinations by a urology specialist.

Despite the allegations, Florentina emphasized that her client continues to uphold the presumption of innocence, noting that the claims still require legal proof.

Separately, Kuta Police Chief Commissioner Laksmi Trisnadewi denied that officers committed any acts of violence against MBC. She maintained that the suspect’s medical condition was unrelated to physical abuse.

“The individual’s health condition was not caused by physical violence. From the beginning of the arrest, the suspect was cooperative,” she said.

As of Tuesday, Bali Police stated that the investigation into Iptu MDP remains under the authority of the Professional and Internal Affairs Division, which is handling the case in accordance with applicable disciplinary and ethical procedures.
