BALINEWSID.COM, KLUNGKUNG/KARANGASEM — The Bali chapter of the Democratic Party stepped up its environmental campaign by holding the Gerakan Langit Biru (Blue Sky Movement), a large-scale clean-up operation at Goa Lawah Beach in Klungkung and Jasri Beach in Karangasem on Friday (Aug. 28, 2026).

At Goa Lawah, around 220 joint personnel were deployed to remove organic and plastic waste from the coastal area. The clean-up was held one day after the Purnama full moon celebration, when Goa Lawah is typically crowded with devotees coming to pray.

The initiative is part of a series of activities leading up to the Democratic Party’s 25th anniversary, with the main celebration scheduled for Sept. 9, 2026.

Chairman of the Bali Democratic Party Regional Executive Board (DPD), Made Mudarta, said the Blue Sky Movement was not merely a ceremonial political activity, but reflected the party’s commitment to environmental protection and the community.

“The Blue Sky Movement is not merely a symbol that the Democratic Party cares about the environment. It also shows that the party cares about our own communities,” Mudarta said.

He expressed hope that the movement would continue on a regular basis, involving party branches at the sub-district and district levels across Bali. The initiative also serves as support for the Klungkung regency government’s programs on waste management and waste sorting.

In Karangasem, the Bali DPD and Karangasem DPC of the Democratic Party carried out a similar clean-up at Jasri Beach. The activity was led by Mudarta and attended by Bali electoral district member of Commission IX of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) Ni Putu Tutik Kusuma Wardhani, Karangasem Democratic Party DPC Secretary I Wayan Suparta, and members of the Democratic Party faction in the Karangasem Regional Legislative Council (DPRD).

Party cadres cleaned the Jasri Beach area, focusing particularly on plastic waste that could pollute the coastal environment. The event was also accompanied by community-oriented competitions, including a tug-of-war contest.

I Wayan Suparta said environmental protection efforts in Karangasem should not be limited to coastal areas.

He said the concept could be expanded through the Balinese philosophy of Nyegara Gunung, which emphasizes maintaining the natural environment from the sea to the mountains.

“The purpose of this movement is to clean the coastal environment. In Karangasem, we hope it will not stop at the beach. In Bali, we have the concept of Nyegara Gunung. Environmental protection can cover the coast as well as the mountains,” Suparta said.

Mudarta said he was pleased to take part directly in the clean-up at Jasri Beach. He highlighted the area’s unique natural setting, where the sea meets a river.

“I am very happy today because the natural atmosphere here is extraordinary. This is also a meeting point between the sea and the river, reflecting the concept of Nyegara Gunung,” Mudarta said.

The Blue Sky Movement has previously been held in several areas across Bali, including Badung, Bangli, Tabanan, Buleleng, Jembrana, Gianyar, Denpasar and Klungkung.

The environmental campaign forms part of the Bali Democratic Party’s activities ahead of its 25th anniversary. Beyond cleaning public spaces, the activities are intended to strengthen engagement between party cadres and local communities through mutual cooperation.

Mudarta also said the anniversary momentum could serve as a stepping stone for the party ahead of future political contests. He recalled the Democratic Party’s performance in the 2009 general election, when it emerged as the country’s leading party with around 22 percent of the national vote.

“In 2009, the Democratic Party became the number one party nationally, with 22 percent of the vote. Hopefully, in the next election in 2029, the Democratic Party will once again achieve success,” he said.

The Blue Sky Movement will continue in various parts of Bali until the Democratic Party’s 25th anniversary on Sept. 9, 2026.

The campaign carries a broader message that protecting Bali’s cleanliness and natural environment is a shared responsibility.
