BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR — A 38-year-old man from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Ferdinand Faot, was found dead at the bottom of the Tukad Mati canal in the northern Pakabar Bali area, Padangsambian Klod Village, West Denpasar District, early Monday (August 17, 2026).

Ferdinand had previously been reported missing after leaving home to go fishing on Sunday (August 16) at around 3 p.m. local time, following a church service.

Denpasar Police Public Relations Section Head Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, S.H., M.H., said the victim’s wife, Yulianingsih (38), lost contact with her husband at around 5 p.m., when his mobile phone became unreachable.

Ferdinand had not returned home by around 7 p.m., prompting his wife to go to the location where he usually went fishing. She found his motorcycle at the site.

The family and local residents then conducted a search until around 9 p.m. The family also requested CCTV footage from an apartment near the location. The footage showed Ferdinand arriving at the area at around 3 p.m.

During the search, the family found Ferdinand’s fishing rod intact and apparently unused. The yellow-and-black fishing rod was found pointing toward the canal.

The information was subsequently relayed to the local community leader and a Bhabinkamtibmas police officer before being reported to the police at around 12:05 a.m. on Monday.

The search ended tragically at around 2:20 a.m., when Ferdinand was found at the bottom of the canal in a lifeless condition.

His body was evacuated at around 2:50 a.m. using an Al Mandiri ambulance and transported to Prof. Ngoerah Hospital for further examination and handling.

Police secured several belongings from the scene, including the yellow-and-black fishing rod and a sling bag containing a mobile phone, charger, BCA ATM card and Rp2,500 in cash.

Based on the police’s preliminary assessment, Ferdinand is believed to have slipped and fallen into the canal before drowning. The suspicion was supported by information from the family that the victim could not swim.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident to establish the exact circumstances and cause of Ferdinand’s fall into the canal.

The case remains under investigation by Denpasar Police.
