BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR — Bali Governor Wayan Koster has urged the public not to act reactively or take the law into their own hands following the death of a man identified by his initials as KD, who was allegedly beaten by a mob in Baturiti, Tabanan.

Koster called on residents to remain calm and leave the legal process entirely to the police. He made the statement after attending a coordination meeting with law enforcement officials on Tuesday (July 28).

“Everyone must help maintain a peaceful situation in their respective villages. There is no need to be overly reactive. Preventive measures may be taken, but humanity must always come first,” Koster said.

He added that the Bali Provincial Government would work with community leaders and traditional village authorities to educate residents and raise awareness to prevent similar incidents of vigilante violence from happening again.

Meanwhile, Bali Police Chief Inspector General Daniel Adityajaya confirmed that five people had been taken into custody in connection with the alleged assault that resulted in the victim’s death.

Police are continuing to collect evidence and conduct further legal proceedings in the case.

Responding to questions about economic conditions and the stigma of criminality in several rural areas, Koster said efforts to improve community welfare must be carried out jointly by local governments.

“Regarding economic issues, this does not concern just one village. There are several villages involved. Therefore, the provincial government and district governments must work together to empower local communities,” he said.

The case previously went viral on social media after KD, who was allegedly involved in the theft of a fighting chicken, reportedly died after being attacked by a mob in Baturiti, Tabanan.

The incident drew widespread public attention after a video showing the victim’s child grieving over the death of his father circulated online. The alleged vigilante attack was subsequently condemned by social media users, who called for the case to be handled through the legal system.
