BALINEWSID.COM, JAKARTA – The death of lawyer Rocky Martin Napitupulu (RMN) at an apartment complex in South Jakarta has brought renewed attention to a police report previously filed against him over alleged embezzlement of legal fees amounting to approximately Rp3.29 billion.

The report was confirmed by Jakarta Metropolitan Police Public Relations Chief Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto. He said the report was filed on May 22, 2026, and remains under investigation by the General Crimes Investigation Directorate of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police.

“Yes, it is true that a report was filed on May 22, 2026. The case is currently being handled by investigators from the General Crimes Investigation Directorate of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police,” Budi said on Monday (July 20, 2026).

The report was registered under number LP/B/3684/V/2026/SPKT/POLDA METRO JAYA. In the report, lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea, through his legal representative, reported RMN over alleged embezzlement of legal service fees.

The case reportedly began when Hotman Paris and RMN were appointed as legal counsel in a corruption case in Semarang. The client allegedly transferred Rp17.5 billion in legal fees to RMN, which was intended to be forwarded to Hotman Paris.

According to the complainant’s report, however, not all of the funds were handed over. Hotman Paris was reportedly left with an alleged financial loss of approximately Rp3.29 billion.

The Jakarta Metropolitan Police are still handling the report. However, police said criminal proceedings may be terminated if the reported individual or suspect dies, in accordance with applicable criminal procedural law.

“Under Article 24 of the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP), if the reported individual or suspect dies, the case is terminated,” Budi said.

Meanwhile, RMN was found dead on Saturday (July 18, 2026), at around 11:20 a.m. local time after reportedly falling onto a balcony on the second floor of The G Hotel, in the Karet Kuningan area of Setiabudi, South Jakarta.

Based on the initial investigation, police said the victim was believed to have arrived alone at the Master Piece Apartment before heading toward the gondola rail area on the 46th floor. Police suspect that he jumped from the location. However, the motive and the full sequence of events remain under investigation.

Setiabudi Police conducted a crime scene investigation, questioned several witnesses, and secured closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage as part of efforts to establish what happened.

Separately, information circulating on social media has claimed that RMN had a family relationship with Hotman Paris. Some posts have even described the victim as Hotman Paris’ nephew.

Police, however, have yet to confirm the accuracy of those claims.

“We are still investigating information regarding the victim’s alleged family relationship with certain parties,” Budi said.

As of now, the exact circumstances surrounding RMN’s death, as well as claims regarding his alleged family relationship with Hotman Paris, remain subject to the official police investigation.

It is important to emphasize that the alleged embezzlement case remains a legal process and has not resulted in a final and legally binding court ruling. Therefore, RMN must be presumed innocent under the principle of presumption of innocence unless and until a court determines otherwise.

Likewise, claims regarding an alleged family relationship between RMN and Hotman Paris should not be treated as established facts until they are officially confirmed and substantiated by the relevant authorities.
