BALINEWSID.COM, TANGERANG — The Indonesian government plans to develop up to 100 gigawatts (GW) of additional power generation capacity and increase the share of new and renewable energy (NRE) to 70% in the country’s electricity supply plan, as part of efforts to support its Net Zero Emission (NZE) target for 2050–2060.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced the plan at the opening of Electricity Connect 2026 in Tangerang on Tuesday (Sept. 22).

Bahlil said Indonesia would remain committed to its energy transition despite global dynamics surrounding climate change commitments. He said the government was translating its transition agenda into concrete electricity development programs.

“Indonesia will remain committed to achieving our net-zero emission target between 2050 and 2060. This is not just a theme; it is being turned into concrete programs. In the electricity supply plan, we are pushing for 70% new and renewable energy and adding 100 GW,” Bahlil said.

The planned expansion is expected to require between US$70 billion and US$73 billion in investment. Bahlil emphasized the importance of mutually beneficial cooperation while maintaining a focus on the use of domestic components.

The government’s electricity development strategy also includes major investments in transmission infrastructure to support the expansion of generation capacity.

Darmawan Prasodjo, chairman of the supervisory board of the Indonesian Electricity Society (MKI) and president director of state-owned utility PT PLN (Persero), said the electricity sector was ready to implement the government’s direction and policies.

Darmawan said the national electricity development program would include large-scale additions to generation capacity under the electricity supply plan, along with the construction of approximately 48,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines.

“The answer is only one: we are ready to implement it. The epicenter of the new development of energy is in Indonesia,” Darmawan said.

The scale of the planned investment and infrastructure development is expected to require stronger collaboration among the government, businesses, academics and investors.

Through Electricity Connect 2026, the government is seeking to expand cooperation among stakeholders and accelerate development in the energy and electricity sectors. The event brought together thousands of delegates, hundreds of speakers and exhibitors from Indonesia and abroad.

The planned addition of 100 GW of generation capacity, the targeted 70% share of NRE in the electricity supply plan and the development of 48,000 circuit kilometers of transmission infrastructure form part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen Indonesia’s electricity system.

The programs are also intended to meet the country’s growing energy needs while supporting Indonesia’s transition toward its 2050–2060 Net Zero Emission target.
