North Sumatra Students Rally at Prosecutor’s Office, Demand Corruption Investigations and Transparency in Jampidsus Case

BALINEWSID.COM, MEDAN – An alliance of student organizations in North Sumatra, comprising the Cipayung Plus coalition—including the North Sumatra Regional Leadership of the Indonesian Muslim Student Action Union (PW KAMMI Sumut), the North Sumatra Regional Leadership of the Muhammadiyah Student Association (DPD IMM Sumut), and the North Sumatra Regional Leadership of the Indonesian National Student Movement (DPD GMNI Sumut)—staged a protest outside the North Sumatra High Prosecutor’s Office (Kejati Sumut) on Thursday (July 9, 2026).

The demonstrators urged law enforcement authorities to conduct thorough, professional, transparent, and impartial investigations into a number of alleged corruption cases in North Sumatra.

During the rally, protesters displayed banners reading, “Crush the Demons of Corruption Wearing the State’s Uniform in North Sumatra,” while taking turns delivering speeches. They argued that law enforcement in the province must be strengthened through comprehensive investigations into several alleged irregularities that have drawn public attention.

Protest coordinator Rio Samuel Manurung outlined four key issues that the alliance called on the North Sumatra High Prosecutor’s Office to investigate.

The first concerns alleged irregularities in the construction of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) under PLN’s North Sumatra Distribution Main Unit (PLN UID North Sumatra), including suspected budget markups and procurement manipulation.

The second involves alleged misuse of infrastructure funds through the falsification of official travel order (SPPD) documents within the North Sumatra Strategic Infrastructure Implementation Unit.

The third relates to the alleged misappropriation of post-flood disaster relief funds, which the protesters claimed were diverted to procure government facilities and were accompanied by alleged project fee practices within the Padangsidimpuan City administration.

The fourth concerns an ongoing land dispute involving state-owned enterprise subsidiaries PT Mitratel and Telkomsel over land claimed by residents in Pertapakan Nanggaraja, Simalungun Regency.

Beyond regional issues, the protesters also highlighted developments surrounding cases handled at the national level by the Office of the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus). They urged the Attorney General’s Office, through the North Sumatra High Prosecutor’s Office, to provide an open explanation regarding alleged corruption in the coal sector, which they said should be thoroughly investigated, and sought clarification over claims of possible interference by certain parties in the law enforcement process.

In his speech, Rio Samuel Manurung stressed that law enforcement must remain independent and free from outside influence.

Meanwhile, DPD GMNI North Sumatra Chairman Armando Sitompul, PW KAMMI North Sumatra Chairman Irham Saddani Rambe, and DPD IMM North Sumatra Chairman Rahmat Taufik Pardede stated that they would continue monitoring the progress of the alleged cases.

They also warned that the alliance would organize larger demonstrations if their demands failed to receive a response from law enforcement authorities.

The protest concluded peacefully under police supervision. As of the end of the demonstration, the North Sumatra High Prosecutor’s Office and the parties mentioned in the students’ demands had not issued official statements regarding the allegations. All allegations remain unproven and are subject to investigation and legal proceedings in accordance with applicable laws.
