BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR – Regional leaders across Bali have jointly declared a commitment to achieving 100 percent waste sorting as part of a comprehensive effort to improve waste management on the island.

The declaration was made during the “100 Percent Waste Sorting in Bali” event held at the official residence of Bali Governor Wayan Koster in Denpasar on Wednesday (June 10, 2026). The event was attended by Environment Minister Mohamad Jumhur Hidayat, along with regents and mayors from across the province.

Leading the declaration, Governor Koster called on all Balinese residents to actively participate in waste sorting at the source to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

“With the spirit of Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali – Niskala and Sekala – we call on all Balinese people: Let us realize 100 percent waste sorting together, simultaneously, for a clean, healthy, beautiful, and sustainable Bali,” Koster said, followed by all regional leaders in attendance.

Koster said the event also featured reports on the progress of waste management efforts across Bali, particularly source-based waste management programs that are being implemented throughout the island.

He noted that local governments have also taken steps to stop open dumping practices at all final disposal sites (TPAs), including the Suwung landfill, which has long been one of Bali’s major waste management challenges.

“The next step is the preparation for the groundbreaking of a waste-to-energy facility in Denpasar,” Koster said.

Environment Minister Mohamad Jumhur Hidayat praised the Bali Provincial Government’s commitment to addressing waste issues, describing the island’s progress as highly encouraging.

“I need to say that, in general, Bali is already better than we ever imagined. It is doing very well and continues to move forward while waiting for the Waste-to-Energy Plant project,” Jumhur said.

According to the minister, Bali has adopted a unique approach to waste management by incorporating religious, cultural, and traditional values into environmental programs. He said this local wisdom has become one of the key strengths behind the island’s progress.

While the central government provides general national guidelines for waste management, Jumhur emphasized that local solutions and community-based approaches remain essential.

“Our national policies provide general guidance, but local ingenuity and local wisdom must remain the primary approach. We will continue to support those efforts,” he said.

The declaration marks a significant step in Bali’s broader strategy to establish a sustainable waste management system, eliminate open dumping practices, and advance waste-to-energy development as part of the island’s environmental transformation agenda.
