BALINEWSID.COM, DENPASAR — The Bali Provincial Government, through its Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), is intensifying enforcement against improper waste management, with 28 residents now facing minor criminal charges (tipiring) for illegal waste burning and littering.

Head of Bali Satpol PP, I Dewa Nyoman Rai Dharmadi, emphasized that residents caught burning mixed waste or disposing of garbage irresponsibly will be subject to legal sanctions.

He warned that burning mixed waste—especially when it includes plastic—poses serious health and environmental risks. “If mixed waste containing plastic is burned, the impact is extremely dangerous. It is essentially poisoning oneself and the surrounding environment,” he stated.

Dharmadi explained that the enforcement of minor criminal charges is not merely punitive but also aims to create a deterrent effect and educate the public on responsible household waste management. He stressed that all parties—residents, vendors, and business operators—share equal responsibility in maintaining environmental cleanliness.

“Only dry materials such as wood and leaves may be burned, and even then not on a large scale, as it can trigger fires and pollution. People must act wisely and avoid disturbing their surroundings,” he added.

Data shows that 11 violators were recorded in Badung Regency, while 17 others were identified in Denpasar. Some cases have already proceeded to court, while others are still awaiting trial schedules.

“Tipiring hearings are held every Friday at the court. We are still waiting for detailed verdict reports as the process is ongoing,” he said.

Under existing regional regulations, violators may face up to three months in jail or fines of up to Rp50 million.

Dharmadi stressed that enforcement applies equally to everyone, regardless of status, including both local residents and foreigners. For foreign nationals who violate the rules, authorities will coordinate with immigration officials for further action.

In addition to illegal burning, indiscriminate dumping of waste remains a key enforcement target. “Anyone caught in the act of littering or burning mixed waste will be dealt with firmly,” he concluded.
