BALINEWSID.COM, JAKARTA — Indonesia’s Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) has honored a number of high-performing local governments in the Papua region as part of the 2026 Batch II Regional Papua Local Government Achievement Awards.

The awards ceremony was held in Jakarta on Monday (Sept. 28, 2026), highlighting local government performance in basic public services and several strategic regional priorities.

The assessment covered access to education, waste and environmental management, the implementation of the government’s 3 Million Houses Program, as well as access to and the quality of health services.

Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian said the awards were intended to encourage local governments to improve their performance in governance and public services.

“This is already the second batch, and the final round of Batch II is in Papua. After this, we will move into the third batch,” Tito said.

The minister said the awards were organized by dividing Indonesia into six regional groups: Kalimantan, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java-Bali, Maluku-Nusa Tenggara, and Papua.

The regional division was designed to ensure that assessments took into account the different conditions and characteristics of each region.

“Congratulations to those who have received the awards. Hopefully, this will serve as motivation,” Tito said.

Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago said the achievements reflected cooperation at the local level and a shared understanding between the central government and local administrations in implementing national programs.

“I would also like to thank the regional leaders who have implemented national programs in their respective regions,” Djamari said.

In the Population Access to Education Services category, the provincial-level awards went to Papua Province and West Papua Province.

At the regency level, the recipients were Sorong Regency, Maybrat Regency and Paniai Regency.

The awards in the provincial capital category went to Manokwari Regency, Nabire Regency and Jayawijaya Regency.

In the ASRI Waste Management and Environmental Management category—ASRI standing for Safe, Healthy, Clean and Beautiful—the provincial-level awards went to Southwest Papua Province and Highland Papua Province.

At the regency level, the recipients were South Manokwari Regency, Teluk Wondama Regency and Raja Ampat Regency.

The provincial capital category recognized Sorong City, Merauke Regency and Jayawijaya Regency.

For the Implementation of the 3 Million Houses Program category, the provincial awards went to Central Papua Province and Papua Province.

At the regency level, the recipients were Mimika Regency, Jayapura Regency and Teluk Bintuni Regency.

The provincial capital category recognized Merauke Regency, Jayapura City and Sorong City.

In the Access to and Quality of Health Services category, the provincial-level awards went to South Papua Province and Southwest Papua Province.

The regency-level recipients were Fakfak Regency, Biak Numfor Regency and Boven Digoel Regency.

In the provincial capital category, the awards went to Jayapura City, Nabire Regency and Manokwari Regency.

The event was attended by House of Representatives Commission II Chairman Rifqinizamy Karsayuda, Minister of Housing and Settlement Areas Maruarar Sirait, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Chief Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Chief Suharyanto, Deputy Home Affairs Ministers Ribka Haluk and Bima Arya Sugiarto, as well as regional leaders from across Papua and other government officials.
