BALINEWSID.COM, BOGOR — Indonesia is strengthening coordination among ministries and government agencies to accelerate efforts to prevent and control rabies as the country works toward its goal of achieving zero rabies cases by 2030.

The commitment was highlighted during the peak of the 2026 World Rabies Day (WRD) commemoration, organized by the Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health of the Ministry of Agriculture at the IPB Baranangsiang Campus in Bogor on Sunday (Sept. 27).

Held under the theme “One Action for Rabies, Stronger Together,” the event served as a national platform to consolidate efforts toward Indonesia’s Zero Rabies 2030 target.

Representing the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs (Kemenko PMK), Deputy Assistant for Health Capacity and Resilience Nancy Dian Anggraeni emphasized the importance of coordinated action across sectors.

Nancy said Kemenko PMK had developed the Zoonosis and Emerging Infectious Diseases Information System (SIZE) as a cross-sector information hub to support efforts to address zoonotic diseases, including rabies.

“Kemenko PMK has prepared the Zoonosis and Emerging Infectious Diseases Information System, known as SIZE, as a cross-sector hub to support efforts to address zoonotic diseases, including rabies, so that there are no barriers between human health, animal health and the environment,” Nancy said.

She highlighted Kemenko PMK’s role as a coordination hub for national health resilience policies, particularly through the One Health approach, which integrates human, animal and environmental health.

Rabies Requires Cross-Sector Action

The government is treating rabies control as a cross-sector issue requiring coordination among multiple institutions. Efforts extend beyond animal health to include human health, environmental protection, local governments, academic institutions and international partners.

SIZE is designed to support information sharing and integration among sectors. Through the platform, Kemenko PMK is encouraging greater synchronization of data and policies involving the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Forestry and local governments.

The 2026 World Rabies Day event also featured live reports from simultaneous rabies vaccination activities conducted across Indonesia.

The vaccination campaign involved a wide range of facilities and institutions, including animal hospitals, veterinary clinics, local government agencies, veterinary centers, quarantine centers, community animal health centers and universities.

The nationwide activities demonstrated the scale of coordination required between different levels of government and institutions to support rabies prevention.

Kemenko PMK said data interoperability, including through SIZE, could help strengthen coordination and facilitate a more integrated response to rabies.

Java Targets Rabies-Free Status by 2029

The peak of the 2026 World Rabies Day commemoration was marked by the reading of the Declaration for a Rabies-Free Java by 2029 and Zero Rabies Cases in Indonesia by 2030.

The declaration was led by the Director General of Livestock and Animal Health and joined by representatives of ministries and government agencies, local governments, professional organizations, academics, communities and other participants.

The declaration represents a collective commitment to strengthening rabies prevention and control efforts, with the targets of making Java rabies-free by 2029 and achieving zero rabies cases nationwide by 2030.

The event was attended by Bogor Mayor Dedie A. Rachim; Director General of Livestock and Animal Health Agung Suganda; FAO Representative for Indonesia and Timor-Leste Rajendra Aryal; and Director of Species and Genetic Conservation at the Ministry of Forestry Ahmad Munawir.

Other participants included Director of Animal Health Hendra Wibawa, a member of the Ministry of Health’s Directorate General of Disease Control Fadjar Surya Mesing Silalahi, and Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at IPB University, Amrozi.
