BALINEWSID.COM, NAGOYA, Japan — Indonesia is seeking to strengthen industrial and technology cooperation with Japan, with a particular focus on precision manufacturing, semiconductors, aerospace, medical devices, and next-generation technologies.

The initiative was highlighted during a visit by a delegation from Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, led by Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Susiwijono Moegiarso, to Kouwa-Tec Co., Ltd. in Nagoya on Friday (Sept. 18).

The delegation, accompanied by senior executives of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN), was received by Kouwa-Tec President Toshinobu Hayashi and Chief of the Sales Department Takaya Hayashi.

Susiwijono said Kouwa-Tec’s experience in precision manufacturing offered an important example of how a technology-based, high-value-added industry could remain competitive despite challenges from global manufacturers.

“We highly appreciate Kouwa-Tec’s expertise in precision manufacturing for the aerospace, medical, and semiconductor industries,” Susiwijono said.

“Capabilities such as these are increasingly important for Indonesia as we seek to strengthen high-value-added industries, precision manufacturing, and the broader technology ecosystem,” he added.

Kouwa-Tec, which was established in 1965 and is based in Aichi Prefecture, specializes in precision machine parts processing for the aerospace, semiconductor, and medical industries, as well as prototype development.

The company currently operates four manufacturing facilities and holds ISO 9001 and JIS Q 9100 certifications. With more than six decades of experience, Kouwa-Tec has supplied key components to major companies in the aerospace and aircraft industries, including Boeing.

The company is also developing precision components for next-generation technologies, including hydrogen-powered drones and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, under its philosophy of “pioneering new things.”

Cooperation on Investment and Technology Transfer

The Indonesian government sees opportunities to expand cooperation with Japanese companies through investment, technology transfer, and human-resource development.

Susiwijono said Indonesia’s growing market and its commitment to industrial transformation could provide a foundation for deeper cooperation with Kouwa-Tec.

“With Indonesia’s growing market and commitment to industrial transformation, we see significant potential to build cooperation with Kouwa-Tec, including investment, technology transfer, and human-resource development,” he said.

The effort is also supported by the revised Indonesia-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (IJEPA), whose amendment protocol was ratified through Presidential Regulation No. 32 of 2026.

The updated agreement is expected to strengthen market access, investment, technology transfer, capacity building, and industrial connectivity between Indonesia and Japan as part of global supply chains.

Strengthening the Semiconductor Ecosystem

Semiconductor development is emerging as an important component of Indonesia’s technology-based economic transformation agenda.

The government is seeking to strengthen the country’s semiconductor ecosystem through improvements in human resources, technology, investment, and supporting industries.

Bilateral cooperation in the semiconductor sector gained further momentum through discussions on the Indonesia-Japan Joint Roadmap on Semiconductor Industry and Policy in September 2026.

The visit to Kouwa-Tec also provided Indonesian officials with insights into the importance of precision manufacturing and supporting industries in developing a competitive semiconductor ecosystem.

Beyond industrial development, the Indonesian government is also strengthening the governance of strategic trade and technology.

One of the initiatives was the 5th Annual Southeast Asian Forum on Export Control (SEAFEC), held in Indonesia on September 16, 2026, which aimed to strengthen regional cooperation and capacity in managing trade in strategic goods and technologies.

Indonesia has also continued to engage in broader international economic cooperation. At the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on September 12–13, 2026, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto accompanied President Prabowo Subianto in promoting cooperation, innovation, sustainability, and more inclusive global governance.

The visit to Kouwa-Tec is expected to create further opportunities for dialogue and potential cooperation in precision manufacturing, semiconductor supporting industries, aerospace, medical technology, and next-generation technologies.

Potential areas of cooperation include investment, technology transfer, and human-resource development.

During the visit to Nagoya, Susiwijono was accompanied by Deputy for Trade and Digital Industry at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Ali Murtopo Simbolon and officials from the ministry.
